Wanna learn how to start an organic garden? Are you passionate about local foods and local food security? If so, Great Day Natural Produce will teach you all about organic gardening and let you take home some of the produce in exchange for your help! Located in the outskirts of Sherwood, Great Day Natural Produce began in 2008 and sold its produce at the Certified Arkansas Farmers’ Market and through the Arkansas Sustainability Network’s Local Food Club. Nancy Dockter would like to continue to deliver fresh local produce to the central Arkansas region. She needs your help now and throughout the season so that she can do that. In exchange, Nancy will teach you how to start an organic garden of your own and send you home with produce from her garden.
You can’t get a better teacher than Nancy when it comes to organic gardening. In 2007, she completed a a six-month apprenticeship in organic gardening and farming at the Center for Agroecology and Sustainable Food Systems at the University of California at Santa Cruz. Nancy is knowledgeable about topics such as:
- Soil types
- Improving soil with amendments and cover crops
- Garden planning
- What to plant when
- Prepping beds, planting – direct sow, transplants
- Starting and caring for plants in trays
- Weeding techniques
- Organic fertilizers
- Season Extension
- Fall gardening
- Information sources
Nancy will share her knowledge and produce in exchange for your help. Interested? Contact Nancy Dockter at (501)749-2062 or firstname.lastname@example.org to schedule a time when you can come and help out. Since Nancy is out in her garden almost every weekend, the ideal time would be on a Saturday morning around 9 a.m. Her schedule, however, is very flexible, and Sundays and weekdays would work as well.
So this weekend, and any other weekend during the season, lend a hand to a local farmer and learn how to start your own organic garden! For more information, contact Nancy Dockter at (501)749-2062 or email@example.com.
