Those looking to get rid of unwanted, hazardous household waste will have a chance to do so this weekend in Clark and Garland counties.
WHAT: Household Hazardous Waste Day
WHEN: Saturday, October 10 – 8 a.m.-noon
WHERE: Clark County Fairgrounds (Arkadelphia) and Garland County Fairgrounds (Hot Springs)
Materials accepted include automotive waste such as antifreeze, brake or transmission fluid, waxes and polish and cleaning compounds. Oil filters cannot be accepted, and used oil is taken at many auto service centers. Paints accepted include oil-based, water- or latex-based, stains, shellacs, lacquer, varnish, preservatives and aerosol cans; thinners, strippers and solvents like mineral spirits, paint thinners, turpentine, alcohol and other non-chlorinated solvents. Household pesticides and herbicides must be in their original containers, and must be over-the-counter products. Water-based cleaners such as home cleaners for carpet, drains, metal, mildew, ovens, toilets and ammonia products will be accepted. Other items accepted are oxidizers like bleach, Clorox, peroxide and carbon tetra chloride; compressed gas cylinders including outdated propane bottles, and disposable and expired fuel tanks; and flammable liquids such as kerosene and diesel fuel.
To avoid spills, provide tight lids before transporting and place several containers in a corrugated box for stability in car trunk or truck bed. Keep household hazardous waste products away from children and pets, and do not mix products together.
Items not accepted are passenger car tires and electric waste such as computer monitors, central processing units for computers, keyboards, computer mouses, VCRs or DVD players, televisions smaller than 19 inches, electronic games or microwaves. Tires and electronic waste will, however, be accepted at the Hot Springs collection site.
Under current policy for accepting materials, products must be in their original containers with the labels attached. Neither unknown products nor explosive materials will be accepted at any locations. Also, lead acid batteries, automobiles, marine equipment, golf carts or other vehicles cannot be accepted. These can be recycled at most auto garages and recycling stations. Commercial quantities of waste will not be accepted.
There will be a free paint exchange area at the site for those who would like to swap paints or pick up paints.
