ADEQ Accepting Public Comments on Proposed Change to Wilson Creek

A Hot Springs mineral mining company is seeking to have Wilson Creek’s drinking water designation removed by the Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ). ADEQ is accepting comments from the public on the proposed change.

Currently, UMETCO Minerals Corp. discharges primarily treated storm water runoff into Wilson Creek, which is a tributary to Lake Catherine near Hot Springs. If the creek’s drinking water designation remains in place, the company will have to upgrade its technology to meet new standards.

ADEQ is accepting comments from the public on the proposed change until 4:30 p.m., Monday, September 20, 2010. Written comments should be sent to Doug Szenher, Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality, Public Outreach and Assistance Division, 5301 Northshore Drive, North Little Rock, AR 72118.
