Thursday To-Do: Public Hearing on SWEPCO’s Turk Plant Landfill

The Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) will hold a hearing tonight to accept public comments and concerns about a proposed Class 3N solid waste landfill permit with the John W. Turk, Jr. Power Plant facility. The hearing will begin at 6:00 p.m. in the Rapert Auditorium at the University of Arkansas Community College in Hope, Arkansas.

The Class 3N landfill will accept only wastes generated on site. These wastes will primarily consists of fly ash, bottom ash, economizer ash, cooling tower screenings and sediments, coal mill wastes, sediments from facility sumps, storm water ditches and impoundments, and other waste streams generated by SWEPCO. The power plant property includes approximately 2,800 acres, of which 73 acres is permitted for a landfill.

The public hearing will include a technical presentation and an informal question and answer period. Following the informal portion of the public hearing, formal comments will be accepted. Written comments can also be emailed to or mailed to:
